Managing Difficult Behaviour

Boy with angry faceWe’ve previously mentioned an exciting new online tool – Behaviour Skill Builder. This is a free program offered by the Raising Children Network, Australia’s award-winning parenting website.

The trial programis now open to parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

So, if you are the parent of a child aged between 3 and 9, diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability or Developmental Delay, and you live in Australia, then you’re eligible to join the program. Read more: Managing Difficult Behaviour

Supporting Siblings

Two brothers huggingWhen a family has a child with a disability, it’s natural that a great deal of time and resources are focused on this child. This can make it difficult for parents as they try to juggle the needs of all family members.

Sometimes siblings of children and young people with a disability can be overlooked, particularly if there are many demands on their parents’ time and their needs don’t seem so pressing.

Two new resources are available to help families navigate their way through these issues. Both are available in hard copy and online.

Hey Dad is a brilliant blog written by Rodney Clarke, a dad who has a son Daniel, 14, with cerebral palsy.

Rodney speaks with great insight about a huge range of subjects and his latest is a must-read. He talks about a conversation that he had with his son where Rodney asked Daniel, “If you had the opportunity to have an operation to either cure CP or reduce its effect, would you do it?”. Special Disability Trusts

Special Disability Trusts (SDT) have been around for a few years, but the federal government is now looking at removing some of the income tax barriers that are preventing many families from making the most of them.

An SDT is a trust established by parents and family members to provide for the current and future care and accommodation needs of a family member with severe disability. Read more: Special Disability Trusts
