Telecommunications has often been an area of difficulty for people with complex communication needs.

Speech Pathologist Harriet Korner, from ILC NSW, is working with an Adelaide-led group on a telecommunications project for people who have complex communication needs / severe communication impairment and those who live or work with them. Read more: Telecommunications for people with complex needs

Christmas communication boards

Spectronics have some lovely pre-made communications boards in Christmas themes.

Symbol boards such as these are a great way to model and expand the communication skills of both verbal and nonverbal children. Point to the symbols as you talk with your child and help them to point to symbols to communicate with you.

Makaton workshop

Thursday 28 May 2009 – Penshurst

Makaton is a vocabulary of key word signs and gestures used with children with speech and/or language difficulties. Presented by Makaton Australia and The Spastic Centre, this basic Makaton workshop will be of interest to families, carers and professionals working with children with communication needs.

It will be held at Penshurst Anglican Church Hall, 2 Carrington St, Penshurst (cnr King Georges & Forest Rds entrance from Carrington St) on Thursday 28 May from 9.30am to 3.30 pm.

Makaton workshop

Factsheets for parents

Three new factsheets are available to help families with some of the behavioural and social issues associated with having a child with a disability – providing support for brothers and sisters, enhancing social skills for children with a disability and using visual supports to help manage your child’s behaviour. Sibling support – explores the common concerns of siblings including: strong feelings – such as anger, jealousy, guilt, anxiety, embarrassment and loneliness; different sibling relationship; pressure to achieve and be the ‘good’ child; extra responsibilities; the reactions of others; and concerns about the future. The factsheet includes a host of parents tips including open communication, information, quality time, realistic expectations, skills for coping and independence and social support networks.
