Carers Week

17-23 October 2010.

Carers Week is a time to celebrate the 2.6million unpaid family carers who provide a vital contribution to Australian society.

Across Australia carers are providing unpaid care and support for a family member or friend with a disability, mental illness or disorder, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is frail. The week offers an opportunity to celebrate family carers in our community, to acknowledge their contribution and to generate discussion about carer issues.

Mental health is just as important and having a disability, or having a child with a disability, can place a great strain on your emotional wellbeing. Depression is an under-recognised condition in Australia, where the tradition has often been to ‘put on a brave face’.

Carer Payment

The Australian Government is urging parents and carers of children with severe disability to apply to Centrelink to test their eligibility for income support. Major reforms to the eligibility criteria for the Carer Payment (for children) were introduced in July 2009. The Carer Payment provides income support to parents and carers who, because of the demands of their caring role, are unable to support themselves.

New Carer Supplement

A new Carer Supplement has been introduced from June 2009 to assist people with caring responsibilities across Australia. The Carer Supplement is a $600 lump sum paid to people who, on 12 May 2009, were recipients of one of the following payments: Carer Allowance Adult Carer Allowance Child Carer Payment Wife Pension (Age) with Carer Allowance Wife Pension (DSP) with Carer Allowance DVA Carer Service Pension DVA Partner Service Pension with Carer Allowance.
