The Little Things

Looking after a child, or in fact anyone, with a disability takes its toll on the carer’s body. It’s the little things that we, as carers, do on a regular basis that slowly wear us down. The effort required is 24 hours a day and our bodies don’t get a chance to repair. Most of the solutions to assist us are aimed at the big tasks such as lifting him in and out of, say, a bed, bath, or toilet, but there are so many mundane tasks that wear you down.

Hostesss putting on an oxygen maskHave you ever thought why the air hostess tells you to put the oxygen mask on yourself first before helping an infant?

Well lets turn the situation around, you’re in a plane, oxygen goes out of the cabin and the masks drop down. With the thought of saving your child you try and put the child’s on first and, while you are struggling to do this, you pass out. You may have been successful in getting the child’s mask on, however, if you weren’t now you’re both dead … not a good idea, eh?
