Labelled Disabled

Ahhh … you’re in a wheelchair so you must be … – fill in the blank!

We are lucky in that we live in a society which has a reasonable understanding of the needs of people with a disability, however, it still has a long way to go.

Recently our family was invited to a function where we mixed with people who didn’t know Daniel, so wheeling a kid around in a wheelchair attracted a bit of attention.

Complacency Kills

When they were young Daniel and William always took a bath together. It was something any young family would do with young children. The fact that Daniel had CP really was not a consideration as either my wife or I would be within arms reach of Daniel.

After a couple of years I became complacent with the routine of bathing and the relative safety the situation provided based upon the fact that nothing had happened so far.

Attitude Matters

There are a lot of people in this world who care.

There are people who care about disabled kids, there are people who seek to improve society by looking to cure illness, there are people who care about saving the environment and caring for the welfare of animals and yet, even when you add them all up, they are the minority … by a long way.

I Love You Dad

It was 2 am. I was standing outside the waiting room hoping for some news on my wife and child when the doctors and theatre nurses hurried out of the operating theatre, pushing the mobile humidicrib in front of them.

On their way to the intensive care unit the only thing the doctor said to me was, If you want to see your son, you’ll have to run with us …
