Personal responsibility

Personal responsibility is something that we all lay claim to as adults – responsibility for our own health, safety, choices, decisions etc.

As an adult with a physical disability this can be more of a challenge. This is not because we don’t want to do so, but because sometimes the people we rely on for assistance feel responsible for us.

Fatigue

Sometimes, even at three in the afternoon, the hardest thing for me to do is stay awake. That’s not unusual if you’re elderly, but I’m only thirty-something. For years I thought it was just me. At school, I tried to snooze in silence. A typical school day would leave me weary, but exam time would leave me exhausted to the point of not being able to hold a coherent conversation.

If this sounds familiar, be comforted by the fact that it is not just you. From my experience, what I refer to as my sleepy monkey is just another added bonus of the CP fun ship. Read more: Fatigue

Gym

Let me state right now that I am the most unathletic person in the world. Even if I didn’t have a disability, I would be that way, because, well, to be honest, faced with the option of working out or sleeping? I’d be sleeping.

Just recently, I’d become unenthused about life in general, complaining to myself wasn’t working, so I had a brainwave of heading back to the gym … yeah, I know the sloth in me must have been in a coma that day. Read more: Gym
