The Condiment

I may have written about this before, but if I have, I think it’s worthy of a repeat performance.

Out in the world of late, I’ve got the distinct impression that some able-bodied peeps think that the main source of concern in any person with a disability life, is the disability itself.

This is not true. The disability is more like the pepper or the tomato sauce that some people have on everything they eat (even salmon with tomato sauce – now that is umm, different).

Regardless of your condiment of preference in the meal that is life (you can never have too many analogies), my point is this, in my experience and I’m sure many others, a disability is not the core of a person’s life or existence in the same way that hair colour or profession is not the sum of who a person is.  It many add a layer of perspective to every experience we have, but it is not the only perspective we have or that we see life from.

There are many times when my disability is irrelevant to my perspective of life and times.

We have lives and we have personalities, both of which are as complicated and random as the next person.

Sometimes, I’m just a best friend who is annoyed at her friend for having an annoying moment.

Sometimes, I’m the daughter who leaves the dishes in the sink because she hates loading the dishwasher, is lazy and would rather watch TV.

A person with a disability can have a good day or a crap day for the same reasons anyone else can. To assume that any disability a person may have is the source of all their being is as lame and repetitive as the plot of an 80′s sci-fi film.

It’s like adding tomato sauce to everything you eat.  Sometimes it will cover the true flavour of something.

Don’t try salmon with tomato sauce – it is truly disgusting.
