‘Sticking to one’s own kind’ What?!

Okay, this feels weird to write about. I thought that it was obvious, but clearly not. It has just been pointed out to me that some people, in what is almost 2010, still think that people with disabilities would and should only be interested in having relationships with others with disabilities. And yes, I do mean those kinds of relationships.

Even worse, there is a perception that people with cerebral palsy only ‘hook up’ (mum, you know what that means) with others with cerebral palsy. Now, how can I put it? That is complete rubbish! I’m sorry, it just is. It’s short-sighted.

The devil’s in the detail…

Anyone with a disability will agree that one of the major pitfalls – beside the physical aspect – is the paperwork that we have to contend with. Not only must it have been responsible for deforesting large areas of the planet, I also think that, if someone took the time to collect all my paperwork, they’d be able to build a carbon copy of me from scratch and mimic my life and daily routines in ridiculous detail.

Wake up calls

They say this cerebral palsy thing isn’t progressive. I would say that, while the initial brain injury isn’t, its impact can be. As you get older, things become harder, even things you do everyday. Moving was much easier when I was younger. When I was younger, I was also swimming once a week and having physio twice a week.

’Til I was about sixteen, it seemed like keeping that part of me in check required complete devotion. It was boring and monotonous to me, especially as I felt young and indestructible. Around that time, I started cutting back on exercise and physio in favour of school and other less mundane things.
